Description
This is a 2003 Fender American Standard Jazz Bass in Sunset Orange finish. This model was made in small quantities and has a really amazing sounding S-1 switch, making for a bunch of new sounds from this J-bass. The bass is in excellent cosmetic and playing condition and comes with the original molded Fender factory hard case.
The S-1 switch is built into the Volume knob and provides some excellent tones you won't get on any other Jazz. When engaged it boosts the signal sounding a bit like an active circuit. It works only with the neck pickup. So if you have both pickup volumes on and engage the S-1, it automatically switches to just the neck pickup (if you have only the bridge PU volume up, it acts like a kill switch). Cosmetically, the bass is clean, what I'd call 8 or 9/10. It has a couple tiny marks on headstock and back of neck (see pics), also a little one on edge of neck and some pickguard scuffs. Weight is 9 pounds,12 ounces. I have done a setup on the bass and it plays well, but you may need to set up to your own preferences, and should be expected when buying a new/used instrument. Guitar Setup
All our setups are done by our in-house luthier. Setup includes new strings (9s or 10s depending on what the nut is cut for), overall polish, cleaning any gunk off fingerboard, oiling neck, and polishing frets when necessary. We spray out any pots that are noisy, turn the truss rod (if necessary) and set string height at low-to-medium action depending on string buzz present. Since setup is highly subjective you may need to get it set to your particular needs by your personal luthier. Basses get the same treatment minus the string change. Thanks!
Packing
I use quality boxes, thick bubble wrap, and peanuts to pack guitars. I have a very high rate of successful guitar and bass shipping (meaning few damaged instruments). I have been doing this 10 years and know how to pack well--with or without a hard case. As well as being one of the legendary four-string machines, Fender’s great Jazz Bass has long had the reputation of being the perfect instrument for the guitarist that needs to play the occasional bass part. In one move, back in 1960, Leo Fender unleashed a bass that covered pretty much the entire market. He had already invented solid-body electric bass with the launch of the Precision Bass, in 1951. Loosely designed around Jazzmaster lines, the new Fender model proved just as much of a success as its predecessor.
Fast, easy playing
A smaller fit in the hand at the nut was one of the features that made the Jazz Bass an easy transition for guitar players, the resultant closer string spacing allowed fast, easy playing – just as smooth and fast as a Strat or Tele or Jazzmaster. (Beyond the 12th fret, Jazz Bass spacing is more akin to the P-bass, reaching standard spacing by the bridge)
More kick to the mids
With its parallel-wired, multiple pole-piece single-coil pickups, the Jazz Bass’s output is effectively that of a humbucker, delivering more defined string-to-sting clarity than the Precision, with noticeably more kick to the mids. The Beatles, The Band, The Who, Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Larry Graham from Sly & The Family Stone, Marcus Miller, plus the two legends shown in pic # 5 – Jaco Pastorius and Aston “Family Man” Barrett of Bob Marley’s Wailers – all these and countless others have made the Jazz Bass their bass of choice. Amazingly-grained body
Our 2005 American Standard here has as amazingly-grained body, the Ash, visible through the transparent finish, almost resembling cloud formations of a Redondo Beach sunset. (Sunset Orange Transparent was only ever available in combination with an Ash body – a US$100 upcharge. Regular production models featured cheaper Alder bodies)
S-1 circuit
Standard production features include twin graphite truss rods; modern C-profile Maple neck; Maple fingerboard, with rolled edges, medium-jumbo frets and a 9½” radius; individual pickup volume controls and master tone control; string-thru bridge, (can also be strung hardtail); parchment scratchplate; and S-1 switching. Situated on the neck pickup volume knob, the S-1 circuit switches the pickups between series and parallel. Engage the button and the pickups emulate P-Bass tone.
